Computed Tomography Scan
A CT scan is an x-ray examination that produces stacked images of specific internal areas. These images are sent through a computer that joins the layered images together and creates a cross section of the targeted area. These images enable your physician to clearly and accurately propose a diagnosis and treatment plan. With CT scanning the images are able to travel seamlessly and efficiently electronically, thus insuring accuracy and more expedient communication between you and your physician.
CT imaging produces images with enhanced clarity and detail allowing physicians to plan and properly administer radiation treatments. Through this technique a tumor’s size, location and involvement with nearby tissue and organs can be deciphered. Then an effective, personalized treatment plan can be prepared specifically for you.
Contrast Material
When ordering a CT, contrast is occasionally requested. The contrast is a liquid that allows the physicians to more easily see the organs being viewed. The liquid is injected into a vein and then you may also be asked to drink a small amount of contrast material.
What to Expect
For your CT you will be asked to lie down. You will be positioned by a CT technologist so that the imaging device can most effectively focus on the area to be studied. It is of utmost importance for you to remain as still as possible in order to produce the clearest images.
Things to Know
When arriving for your CT scan you should wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. You should not be wearing any metal objects such as jewelry, eyeglasses, or hairpins. It is important to advise your physician if you have hearing aids or dental work as they may interfere with the imaging process.
Results
After reviewing your CT scan the radiologist will send a report to your physician and your physician will then explain the results to you.
