IMRT – What is it?
Intensity modulated radiation therapy is a highly effective and technologically advanced form of treatment for you, the patient. Computer generated images assist in planning and delivering tightly focused radiation beams directly to cancer cells, while sparing the surrounding healthy tissues. This specially designed SmartBeam machine rotates around, you, the patient, transmitting radiation beamlets at nearly the speed of light.
Treatment
In order to provide you with the most effective treatment a preparation session will be scheduled. At this appointment your physicians will utilize a state of the art computer program that will create a treatment plan based upon the size, shape and location of the tumor. This planning session will enable your physicians to deliver a precise radiation dose that conforms to the shape of the tumor.
Procedure
During the procedure the radiation therapist will use ink marks on your skin to locate the treatment area. You will be positioned on the treatment table using specially molded devices that conform to your body. The therapist will leave the room before the SmartBeam machine is turned on and you will be able to communicate via an intercom system. Should you experience any discomfort the machine can be turned off at any time. Once treatment has begun you will not be able to see, hear or feel the beamlets.
After Treatment
With this form of treatment your body will not be radioactive. You will have no limitations as to your contacts or relations with others. Most side effects that patients experience, if any, can be controlled through medication or diet.
